Climate change: issues and response - based on lecture 05/02/10

From the two lecturers, we further understand the issue and response of climate change.

Climate change, also known as global warming, is the increase in the average temperature of Earth since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that most of the observed temperature increase was caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation. Global warming is expected to cause glacial retreat, long-term shrinkage of Greenland ice sheet. As a result, worldwide sea level will rise, putting low sea-level nations in danger, including Singapore.

Human creates this problem and is responsible to solve it, for sustainable development and the next generations. Measures should be taken for climate stabilization, through institutional and individual actions. Institutional actions include energy supply, transport, buildings, industry, agriculture and waste management sector. Individual can fight climate change by leading a sustainable lifestyle, from consuming sustainable food, staying in sustainable home, to recycling used items and supporting green technology. Everyone can make a difference in the fight with climate change, and the best time to do it is always today!

  3. First of all,Happy Chinese New Year! I would like to comment on PC's first climate change post. It is horrifying to hear that climate change contributes to the rising sea level around the world. Very soon, the sea water will consume the low lying lands that we live on. People will be forced to abandon their homeland and move on to live in the already populated lands. Lesser lands mean that the existence of mankind is threatened. PC is right in saying that we are the creator of all the climate change problems. We need to act as an individual and do our part combating against the climate change before we met our downfall. Fight or await doom...

  4. This is a succinct summary that captures the main ideas of both lectures. The organization is clear, with each paragraph focusing on one key idea.
My suggestion is that when you write a summary, you need to make use of summary markers indicating that these are others' ideas. e.g. you can use summary markers such as "Dr Liong discussed...", he points out..., he explained... etc.
In the summary of the first lecture, the important concept of modelling should also be included as it is a key element in the lecture.

  6. the summary is concise, with hardly any grammer mistakes. With the increase in temperature due to global warming, sea levels will rise and low-lying countries will be at risk of being submerged. Regarding this issue, lives are at stake, solutions have to be implemented as soon as possible to avert the incoming danger.

lastly i feel that we shall keep a good habit to write a summary, to acknowledge the ideas that come from the speakers.
